Paris

We began our journey in France and later proceeded to Italy via train. We arrived in Paris and were dead tired. We checked into our Hotel on Rue Cler , a typical market street in Paris. It was the day of Beaujolais Nouveau. We went out for a meal and a walk intending to have a short afternoon nap and go out again. Our small hotel was across from a neighborhood bar where we could hear the accordionist playing Bal-musette. We wanted to join the festivities but were so tired we just continued to sleep.

The next morning we rose early and went to find espresso. We went into the cafe from the night before to order coffee. It was a bit odd because the locals in for their quick cup of coffee chatted about the Americans and laughed. We wondered about finding a pastry shop and had a wonderful day walking in Paris, riding the Metro, and wandering neighborhoods.

 Paris
Montmartre , where this was taken, was a favorite place of ours where we visited the Sacré-Cœur Basilica which those of you who have seen Amelie will recognize it.

The next day we did the same thing. Although we walked under the Eiffel in the evening, we did not go in. We did walk down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées as everyone was heading to work. We loved the metro and found people quite friendly and helpful.

We ended our Champs-Élysées walk at the Arc de Triomphe, a magnificent place to stand for these photos.

Our stay in Paris was too short as our plans took us east to Epinal in the Vosges to visit the family who hosted Lydia for her exchange year.
