Onedia in the Ozarks

Golly Gee, Where are Andy and Opie?

If you check out my New Finds on the sidebar you will see a link to Women Against Sarah Palin which is one of many blogs written by women who are not fooled by shiny objects. Like many people, I was not swayed by Sarah Palin’s over use of Mayberry language and the “we know a secret” winks. I found it humorus but sad. Who exactly does she consider Joe Sixpack and Hockey Mom to represent. Her description marginalizes the people whom she refers to in that manner. The fact is that Americans cannot be lumped into such groups. We are diverse and multifaceted and most of us cannot be easily pegged by where we live or what we do or what we drink.

I live in a tiny community where ninety-nine per cent of the population have a European heritage but most of the people I hang out with would appreciate a more diverse population. Because we are in the Ozarks, Sarah might think we are all poorly educated narrow thinkers and would fit right into her Joe Sixpack thinking. Not so. My community has a high percentage of people over sixty and most probably spent most of their lives in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, California, Colorado, Iowa, or any of a number of other states.

There are plenty of people who pick up a sixpack at the local liquor store but it is just as likely to be an import as domestic and they are just as likely to pick up a good bottle of wine along with the sixpack. I doubt that Sarah understands or would countenance my views or concerns.

It seems that I am more concerned about protecting the amazing environment that she has in Alaska than she is. I understand that using force to counter terrorism will not root out the causes of terrorist thinking. She does not seem to be as concerned about my friends whose family is without medical insurance as I am. Perhaps she is more interested in gaining more power than in really helping us. While Joe Biden has been successful with not questioning people’s motives; I absolutely question her motives.

Most of the discussions about her failing to answer the question about her Achilles Heel attribute it either to not hearing the question or to simply deciding not to answer the question. I firmly think she has no clue what an Achilles Heel is. She did not get it. She was too busy falling back on her talking points and the announcement of her talking straight to the people was more a way to cover the fact that she was asked a question she did not understand or for which she had no answer.

All of her folksy Mayberry antics tells me she does not respect my intelligence or yours. I hope that people do not get pulled in by her hammy behavior with no substance to back it up. As far as I am concerned she consistently trots out Energy as her one trick and simply dresses it a little differently each time expecting to misdirect our attention.

Sarah, Andy and Opie are wiser than you think!

Yes, she came across as so shallow.

    Great post on Palin.

I consider it to be utter hubris that she accepted the nomination. Neither she nor McCain can really think she is qualified to serve as vice president. If he really wanted a woman or a governor or both there are so many others who are more qualified.

I have a boss lady on temporary assignment to My Work. She calls our place of employment Mayberry simply because we’re rural and the pace is a bit slower. Otherwise, our mission would make anything on Wall Street pale by comparison.

    It makes my blood boil.

People who don’t know Mayberry have no right to talk about Mayberry, and by the way, most Mayberrians have more common sense than most.

Evidently common sense and politics are like oil and water.

  5. Me too!!! although never an opie, and i think i know what an achilles heel is, and yes a good bottle of wine over a sixpack. :) I’m a very scared 40 something woman who thinks we are going backwards rather than forwards with accepting someone like Palin. She’s so very ordinary its scary. Thanks for all the links. got a couple giggles out of them.
