A Day Spent Well

Saturday was a great day.  I spent it doing things I really enjoy.  It was the day that I presented my first workshop on blogging.  See details by clicking on the Workshop tab at the top of the blog.  This was not my first workshop simply the first on this topic.

I really enjoy doing workshops and haven’t in so many years.  It always helps me learn and organize my thinking through the simple act of preparing for the workshop.  It was offered as part of the Bel’ Arco Writers’ Workshop series originally intended for local writers to learn more about the importance of blogging as part of showcasing their work and talent.

However, we also marketed to a wide range of people including small business people as an enhancement to their static web pages (or as an alternative).  Many of the small resorts around here use some local offering who creates the site and then charges a fee for each upload of a photo or change to the site.  I respect that arrangement and for some that is just perfect.

However, with the sliding economy many of the resorts naturally or on advice want to develop a personal dialogue with past and future guests.  For these owners, a blog is a great addition because they are in complete control.  I had two resort owners at the workshop (one owner was actually a couple). I also had three writers and assorted people who were either already writing on a blog or who wanted to begin blogging for one purpose or another.

The size was a perfect 10 and the participants were eager and ready to learn.  Great questions, great attitude, parfait.  We had fun in the last couple of hours as they gathered around the laptops provided and or brought with.  Most computers had a team of two and we stepped through creating both a Blogger and a WordPress blog.

They all promised to send me links of their blogs when the get them going.  One started that night and we have a dialogue going (included was 30 days of mentoring).  The feedback was good and all left eager to get started. I created a forum on this site for them to be able to ask questions and discuss their progress.  We will see how that goes.   I had a really good day but returned home tired.    I learned from them, which is always a good outcome.

I gave them copies of my favorites from my blogrolls so some of you may get more visits from Arkansas.  We spent plenty of time talking about the importance of reading and commenting on other blogs.

I have just comeback from the bookshop and saw the book of a girl who started blogging and now they published her book! so I think that blogging is a good way to promote the work and talent of writers.

“We spent plenty of time talking about the importance of reading and commenting on other blogs”. I think this is a fundamental part of blogging.People can clearly see when someone has just read a sentence of the post and then just rush to comment whatever comes to mind. In my opinion, that shows that the person is only interested in getting a visit back from me and I don’t like it but anyway…it is also difficult to keep up with even google reader. There are people who post twice or three times a day everyday! :) and time is so little :)

    Have a nice day Onedia,

Thanks, Wen, for coming by. You are right on both counts. I did plenty of research to prepare for the workshop and to improve my own blogging experience.

Mallika, You could have a nice blog for photos and link to the other. WordPress has a nice theme for photos. Let me know what you want to do and I can help you with the html possibly or point you in the right direction.

  • Hello Onedia, Thanks for following my blog! That is cool to see you held a workshop on blogging. It is going to take me a while to figure out what twitter is and the different format of your blog…as I am fairly new to blogging. Just wanted to stop by and look around…hope I did this right and it lets me post this comment!

It was perfect. Look forward to more visits.

What a marvelous workshop! You are so right – preparing for workshops, presentations, and any lengthy talks where you’re teaching something to a group is a wonderful way to arrange one’s own thoughts. Great work!

  • Onedia says:

Thanks Keli, I loved it. Wish I could take it on the road. I believe that blogging is good for what ails the world.
