Week before last the final straws landed on this camel’s back. The back isn’t broken but the camel is mad. To be brief, for the moment, a series of events occurred in rapid succession that so upset me and my husband that we decided that we cannot tolerate living here permanently. We do have certain commitments, familial and financial, that keep us here in the short term, but we are now searching for a different place to live.
My brother thinks that those things that bother us here (bigotry, narrow-thinking, mean spirits, government by clique, bending laws, flim-flam. . . ) will be abundant anywhere we might go. He believes that it has been everywhere we have lived and that size of communities masked it. I know in my heart that is not the case.
I believe there are places where people behave like a community. Where people take care of each other and work for the best interests of the entire community. I know there are places that are inclusive and forward-thinking. Even if I am idealizing the quality of possible communities out there, I know absolutely that there are places that do not have chiggers and ticks in January and that are close to the sea.
We started researching places a while back by looking for places considered to be enlightened or liberal. We eliminated the hot humid climates and the ultra expensive. The result is that we are now focusing on coastal Maine small towns.
Any thoughts?

Hi There! Tried to leave a comment the other day and it wouldn’t take…so I’ll try again. I may be a bit biased, but a little coastal town in Maine may be just what the doctor ordered! Aren’t you coming here sometime soon? Your brother is right in a sense, but we just don’t have the population here (1.3 million in entire state) for it to be as noticeable. Come here, spend time, see what you think! Best wishes to you…I do love your jewelry you know!
thanks Fearless…I am going back to my jewelry and possibly looking at learning a bit of lampwork glass. We are coming soon later this month or first of next. Thanks for coming by.
Good luck to you!
Good luck to you Onedia. Yes it’s true that human nature is the same most places. But living in a place where people have kind of similar ideas to yours would be easier than making do where your neighbours and you have no meeting ground at all!
Since I am aware of the events of which you speak, this slightly right of center person and city official has removed myself from any more than minimal commitment to my office, no extra assignments, only duties as I perceive.
However, I do somewhat agree with your brother, except living in a “blue” state should produce a majority of similar thinking in which you are more comfortable.
I know artistic endeavors will help you in the the interim. CAC

Thanks Susan and Tamera.
CAC, I was not of course including you in the comments about the governing by clique…you I fear have waged a losing battle as a one person army of light. I don’t mind people from all sides of the political and social thinking spectrum. You are so open to all points of view and along with the other C have been such a source of hope and strength. Sad that we all have been pushed to our limits. Although you and she hung on so very long.
Oh… I’m sorry to hear this news O. Particularly as I know how much of your time you have given up to put into local community so I’m sure you must have jolly good reasons to have to come to this decision.
I hope you can find somewhere that you feel happy O.
Its difficult to find a place which has everything one requires to live a peaceful reasonbaly sane life. But yes there are certain things that one cant compromise with which we discussed sometime ago Therefore, wishing you luck .
Mrs T and Mallika, It is not time wasted here (all time we spend someplace difficult helps us learn more about ourselves and about the nature of people) and I need to be close to my parents. If we had chosen a different place in Arkansas such as where my sister lives I might not have been reminded of how very much I need to be near the sea. I think I have the spirit of a sea creature.
