Do IT Right!
I am married to an engineer whom I lovingly refer to as an En GA Nerd. I do this because he likes to really plan his projects and think through it thoroughly. That is why the studio has a design worthy of an architect. He likes to “do it right” which also includes “the right tool for the job”. He spent the last year acquiring the right tools. You probably are thinking that I am a lucky woman and that all the around-the-house projects are easy peasy quick as you please.
I am lucky and the finished project is really fine work. However, nothing, I repeat nothing is ever simple. Case in point is our simple paint Katha’s bedroom before we move the bedroom furniture into it. We need it done by August 7. So, here is how it goes:
- Choose a paint color – periwinkle blue
- Now would be a good time to paint the trim white
- Move furniture out of room
- Remove vertical blinds from windows
- We hate vertical blinds lets change those now
- Remove pictures from the wall
- Notice lots of nail pops to repair
- Decide to re-texture the wall — we like a Tuscan plaster style finish anyway
- Notice many of the nail pops are near ceiling
- We should really install crown molding to help deal with that
- The ceiling fan makes a noise and we should replace it
- We really should paint the ceiling when we take the fan down
- We put new door handle on bathroom with lock so we should do same for bedroom
- Closet door needs to match the room door
- Let’s update the light switches
- Well while we are doing the switches lets just do the outlets as well
- Buy: ceiling, wall and trim paint, wall texture, 2 door handles, 2 light switches, 5 outlets, 3 shades, fan with light, and crown molding
- Patch nail pops
- Apply new wall texture
- Remove ceiling fan
- Paint ceiling (he finished this step today and wall texture is drying)
- Install new fan
- Paint doors
- Paint wall
- Paint trim
- Pre-paint and install crown molding
- Paint crown molding
- Install shades
- Have carpet cleaned
- Hang pictures
- Move in furniture
You can bet it will be beautiful and Done Right!

All the DIYs that you Americans do is scary for a person like me. Here in India, none of these things is DIY. There’s always someone else to do it.
for many people here it is still DIY but Matthew prefers DIY and in this area you cannot find anyone reliable to do such things or it costs 3 times as much.
Most people would simply paint the room and be done with it.
I love periwinkle. But I sympathize with you. The only thing I can think of to say is that this is better than painting the room and THEN deciding to change everything else…this happened to me once. Once.

AND We will officially be able to say one room down in the remodel and addition project.!
Whew, I am already tired at step 10!!! But it is a reminder of some of our remodeling.
A seemingly simple paint job–don’t evefry say that… it is not at all simple!
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. There’s no end to DIY is there? We’re having a porch built at the moment and one of our neighbours remarked “I see your 10 year plan is coming to fruition.” Well, I guess so but then when that’s done it’ll be time to start decorating the interior all over again…. Oh dear when it comes to maintenance and DIY no job is ever simple!
